A talk with Kelsie Acton – about Accessibility across communication, performance and participatory programs

Kelsie Acton is a neurodivergent access consultant, researcher and choreographer. She is currently the Inclusive Practice Manager at Battersea Arts Centre, the world’s first Relaxed Venue. Her PhD research into the accessibility of timing in disability dance rehearsal was funded by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada and she completed a residency at Siobhan Davies Dance Centre (UK). She was the plain language translator for McSweeney’s The Audio Issue and San Allard’s Writing from the Groin. As an access consultant she has worked in the UK, Canada and US. She is a member of the Critical Design Lab, a multi-national, multi-institutional collective focused on critical access, disability and design where she works on the Remote Access Archive, a digital archive of the ways disabled people have connected and created community at a distance.
Summary of the Presentation:
As the world’s first Relaxed Venue Battersea Arts Centre (BAC) embeds access and the social model of disability into every part of the organization. This presentation will examine the social, medical/individual and charitable models of disability and how they are often used in arts contexts. We will then examine how BAC embeds access across it’s communications, human resources, performance, and participatory programs.
